(The American Conservative) Poll: Most Americans Oppose U.S. Support for the War on Yemen

    By DANIEL LARISON • November 26, 2018, 9:45 AM

According to a new YouGov survey, most Americans oppose U.S. support for the war on Yemen:

A majority of Americans oppose US support for the ongoing Saudi-led war in Yemen, with 58 percent of respondents in a recent survey wanting lawmakers to curtail or halt the supplying of arms for a conflict considered the world’s worst ongoing humanitarian disaster.

Only 13 percent of Americans say they want to lawmakers maintain or increase arms sales to the US allies in the conflict, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, according to the survey conducted by the polling firm YouGov and commissioned by the relief group International Rescue Committee...
Trump refuses to listen to the majority of the country. He refuses to keep his campaign promises to get America out of these endless wars. The Democratic nominee in 2020 will harp on this, just like Trump harped on it when he ran against Hillary. Trump's strong non-interventionist campaign rhetoric helped him get elected in key swing States. But Trump has forfeited the non-interventionist mantle to his progressive opponents. If Bernie is the nominee, he's going to hammer Trump as a pro-war president who lied the country. And Bernie will be right. Unfortunately, Trump's base refuses to admit that anything has gone seriously awry with Trump's presidency. To call it a "presidency" is a misnomer at this point, since it is clear that Bolton and Pompeo exercise just as much power as Trump does. They are ALWAYS obstructing Trump's foreign policy instincts. But Trump's base doesn't even care. They think it's fine that Bush-era, Iraq war retreads like Bolton are occupying positions of power inside the government even though Trump railed against the Iraq war as a "big fat mistake".

I see it differently. We are providing support to the Saudis in our effort to destroy Al Qaeda and IS in Yemen. That effort is authorized under the AUMF.

The Congress should change or revoke the AUMF.
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

You are not the majority of this country. You are a minority of one.

The congress has said the war against the Houthis is not authorized. And a majority of Americans agree. Trump promised to end unnecessary wars, not continue them forever. This will hurt him in the 2020 elections, just like it hurt Hillary in the 2016 elections.

President Trump also promised to defeat IS.

The Congress can explicitly withhold funds in the next budget. Or they can do the honorable thing and revoke the authorization for the use of military force. Any other course of action is for show.

Every attack on Syria by US or Israel during the years of war was an act of support for ISIL. Trump speak with forked tongue.

Why do you keep referring to ISIS when it is the war on the Houthis that is at issue here?

The attacks in Yemen are attacks against Al Qaeda and IS. If Congress believes our ability to fight Islamic terrorism should be halted they can revoke the authorization for the use of military force (AUMF).
