Europe looks to remold internet with new copyright rules

This will gut fair use.

WHAT DOES THE DIRECTIVE SAY?

The most vigorously debated part of the legislation is a section that makes companies responsible for making sure that copyrighted material isn't uploaded to their platforms without permission from the original creator. It puts the legal onus on platforms to prevent copyright infringement but critics say it will end up having a chilling effect on freedom of expression on the internet and could result in censorship.


Another section of the bill that caused concern requires search engines and social media sites to pay for linking to or offering up snippets of news articles.

I think it is silly. When people quote from and properly attribute it to the author and publication they are essentially getting free advertising and reaching a lot more people.

Europe is tired of free speech and hates the speed at which the Internet moves the news.

All internet ip's are from the US Department of Commerce. It has been farmed out to Network Solutions. There are other places to get them but they all go through Network Solutions. We, in effect, control the net. If we say no, it's no. We don't tell the search engines how to work but we do tell other nations what we won't allow.

Obama tried to give this up to others but we were saved from that stupidity,

Europe gonna Europe. The US is nowhere near as free as they'd like you to believe, not by a long shot, but at least we're not Europe.
