Let's talk about dogs.

You are unlikely to ever get dog breeding highly regulated without the kind of legislation that many would view as 'unconstitutional'.

I'm afraid the concept of 'hybrid vigor' involves more than cross breeding two over bred animals and I'm concerned that the study did not actually do a deep dive in that respect.

As to the mental stability of hybrid dogs, that is far more affected by the owners than genetics. The same people who are unable to control the behaviors of their children are also responsible for uncivilized dogs. When you get down to the very basics, teaching small children to behave and teaching dogs to behave is not extremely dissimilar. Tone of voice, consistency and not rewarding bad behavior is the same for both. The same people who ruin their children, ruin their dogs. Aggressive dogs are often insecure dogs who are not taught to be confident by ignorant owners and are often deliberately or inadvertently rewarded for aggression or treated with cruelty. The same holds true for children. The difference is that at some point you can reason with children but you can't reason with dogs and dogs don't continue to develop intellectually.

Fortunately, dogs don't read...studies or anything else. They continue to be dogs, and will probably continue to do so until the end of the world.

One of the saddest stories I ever read was in a collection of post-apocalyptic short stories. It involved a small group of highly genetically modified and enhanced human soldiers, both male and female. These people could heal from almost any injury almost instantaneously, subsist on a diet of radioactive waste, etc. Non-modified organisms of any kind were an extreme rarity. One day they find a bedraggled stray dog, and they decide to adopt it, although they are baffled by its inability to heal itself as they do, and obtaining food that it can eat is extremely expensive. Finally, the dog sustains an injury that it can't recover from, and the people just watch it, coldly and unemotionally, until it dies, and then they eat it.

Discipline and emotional control are the difference between living in a state of chaos and civilization. Certainly if you are unwilling to make that investment in children or dogs, you shouldn't have them.

That's not what it said. It said it didn't find that hybrids were more healthy. I would suggest that they are including hybrid designer dogs in the mix, which includes many dogs with the very same recessive gene and inline breeding issues.

It's not about having a mini me, it's about having a functional member of society - either human or canine.
