I haven't advocated legislation. Good breeders and buyers of purebreds should demand that the ACK genetically test puppies before they can be registered.

Not sure what type of testing the AKC could do that would mitigate the existence of bad breeders who sell to people who don’t show their dogs or puppy mills.

Many people want AKC registered dogs. People assume that it assures that the dog comes from a good breeder and good bloodlines. If the ACK required that each pup be tested for the genetic issues that plague purebreds, bad breeders would not be able to sell genetically defective pups that are AKC registered. That would eliminate a great deal of the market for backyard and other irresponsible breeders.

It wouldn't stop people who don't care about ACK registration from buying from sketchy breeders, but it would prevent those who go to the trouble and expense of getting an AKC registered dog from the heartbreak and expense of having a chronically sick animal.

Reputable breeders have thorough vet checks and certifications prior to selling. We aren’t talking about reputable breeders.

The AKC requires bloodlines before registering and they will not register dogs who have been bred from lines that are directly related.

These traits are already bred into these dogs. It’s happened over multi generations spanning hundreds of years. You can’t expect legitimate breeders to breed these traits out of them.

More regulations would only encourage more irresponsible breeders.

Actually a vet check would not reveal many of these genetic time bombs. In general, they are not apparent in a puppy. They only develop later.

Again, I'm not talking about regulations. I'm talking about the industry policing itself. The AKC is not a government organization but it has knowingly supported inline breeding.
