But for those who want to dive in the books and commentary books below are all excellent. I put a favorite first, but for early history, see Wood or 'That's not'. O'Neill is another favorite of mine.

'The Glory and the Dream: A Narrative History of America, 1932-1972' William Manchester - best narrative history I have read

'The Idea of America: Reflections on the Birth of the United States' Gordon S. Wood

'American High: The Years of Confidence, 1945-1960' by William L. O'Neill
'A Bubble in Time: America During the Interwar Years, 1989-2001' by William L. O'Neill
'Coming Apart: An Informal History of America in the 1960s' by William L. O'Neill

“Battle Cry of Freedom,’’ James McPherson The definitive history of the Civil War. One of the greatest works of history I’ve ever read and arguably the best one-volume history in existence. Having said that…

'That's Not What They Meant!: Reclaiming the Founding Fathers from America's Right Wing' Michael Austin

'Injustices: The Supreme Court's History of Comforting the Comfortable and Afflicting the Afflicted' Ian Millhiser

'White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America' by Nancy Isenberg

    The Forgotten /Founder/Patriot/Martyr

    Joseph Warren

It was Warren who introduced the Suffolk Resolves as a response to the Coercive Acts . Paul Revere carried it to the 1st Continental congress where it was endorsed

It was Warren who would die at the Battle of Bunker hill(Breed's hill)

    • proclaimed the Coercive Acts to be unconstitutional and void; officials charged with the enforcement of these illegal acts were called upon to resign
    • urged Massachusetts to establish a separate free state until the Coercive Acts were repealed
    • suggested that future tax collections be retained by the new Massachusetts government and not passed along to British officials
    • called for the creation and enforcement of a boycott of British goods and trade with Britain
    • advised the people of Massachusetts to appoint militia officers and commence arming their local forces
    • warned General Thomas Gage that efforts to arrest citizens on political charges would result in the detention of the arresting officers
    • announced that subjects no longer owe loyalty to a king who violates their rights.

There was probably no one pushing more for complete independence than John Adams in the continental congress once he realized it was necessary

I enjoyed the HBO special "John Adam's"

My parents took me to Lexington on the 200 anniversary of the "Shot heard round the world" I proudly marched with the troops in the reenactment with my Daisy Air Rifle at shoulder arms (there might even be some B&W photos or 8mm evidence, somewhere)...then I got bored, hid in a bush and pretended to be a sniper LOL!

With an American Revolution thread, we can not leave out the battles of Trenton/Princeton .

This bold and desperate decision by Washington had saved the American revolution.

Setting: Washington and his men has just gotten their asses handed to them and retreated from NY. His men deserted in droves.

The British had went into winter quarters and Washington decided to change the rules and attack in winter.

General George Washington’s army crossed the icy Delaware on Christmas Day 1776 and, over the course of the next 10 days, won two crucial battles of the American Revolution. In the Battle of Trenton (December 26), Washington defeated a formidable garrison of Hessian mercenaries before withdrawing. A week later he returned to Trenton to lure British forces south, then executed a daring night march to capture Princeton on January 3. The victories reasserted American control of much of New Jersey and greatly improved the morale and unity of the colonial army and militias.
