Jury awards couple $2 billion in Monsanto Roundup cancer lawsuit trial

A jury in Oakland, California, has awarded a couple $2 billion in punitive damages after concluding that sustained exposure to Monsanto Co.'s popular Roundup weed killer led to their cancer diagnoses. The couple will receive an additional $55 million for pain and suffering and to cover medical expenses.
The Alameda County Superior Court jury deliberated for less than two days before reaching a verdict.
Seventy-six-year-old Alva and 74-year-old Alberta Pilliod used Roundup for about 30 years for residential landscaping, which the jury believed played a "substantial factor" in their development of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Alva was diagnosed in 2011; his wife, Alberta, received the same diagnosis four years later. They are both in remission.

More than 13,000 plaintiffs have filed similar lawsuits against Monsanto, alleging the company’s herbicides cause non-Hodgkin lymphoma and the company has hidden the risks.

Bayer must really regret buying Monsanto today.

I also made a thread on the EPA lying for monsanto, here is the link to the article. It goes well with your OP. It is quite shocking that they can continue to get away with lying to the public. If they are knowingly covering it up while knowing that this stuff kills, it is tantamount to murder!

It's very hard to have any sympathy for them. I'm sure they will appeal. The enormous size of the award conveys public sentiment regarding fudging the real risks of any and all pesticides. People are tired of being legally lied to in order to make companies rich and richer.

The problem isn't in developing those products, it's in lying about their safety. There are times when the problem, like disease carrying mosquitoes pose a greater risk to life than the chemicals. People should be allowed to make an educated choice and not be told that you can practically eat it on your cereal, it's so safe. Monsanto is guilty of lying. Had they not lied, people like the Pilliods would have at least taken precautions when using the product as they would have with chemicals with known health consequences.

I consider them the cancer company. They have done much more harm than good. https://www.collective-evolution.com...e-by-monsanto/ Not only that for the longest time they wouldn't even label their food, so that we were forced to eat their products whether we wanted to or not. But that has changed but not due to them, due to consumer demand. Thankfully Organics have taken over the market and are labeled. We now know anything that is not labeled, just don't eat it.

It's the lying that's the issue. People can't make an educated decision to use the product nor are they liable to take precautions. It's very much like asbestos which scientists knew was a health hazard but companies continued to use it and not protect their workers for years after they were warned. It's pretty evil because I think they view it as the cost of doing business with no care about the human suffering and death they cause and they have tended to rely on the fact that pursuing these kinds of lawsuits is incredibly expensive, which sick people can't usually afford.

And there are 6 billion hungry people on this planet every day. I'm just not going to weigh in on this one. I don't know what the right answer is when it comes to the balance between bugs and humans.
