Aged white mulberry tree uproots next to Washington Monument

Aged white mulberry tree uproots next to Washington Monument

The tree was there when the Washington Monument was dedicated. That is an old tree.

One day around 1890, the seed of a white mulberry tree, perhaps borne from the droppings of a passing bird, fell on the grounds of the newly dedicated Washington Monument.

It germinated, grew and sank thick roots into the earth. An unlovely tree, it became the abode of bugs, bats and lichens. Tattered kites caught in its branches. And 129 years of history unfolded beneath its boughs.

Over the years, it bent with age. Its roots were exposed by runoff, trampled by human feet and compromised. On Sunday afternoon, battered by wind and rain, its main buttress root snapped and the tree fell.
They think they may be able to save it.

Authorities became concerned when a group of tourists informed them that, while walking past the Washington Monument, they could hear faint pleas, "Help! I've fallen and I can't get up!"

The elderly tree is a "Witness Tree", dating back to monument construction between 1848 and 1884.

The site was relocated before construction began due to unstable soils.

    Get well soon, granny!

I think that area was a swamp that had to be drained to build DC.

That's what happens when you don't have a living will, they put you on life support.

Why save it, its just a white tree anyway. Probably was in favor of slavery and segregation.
