Just a matter of time for laser weapons.

Lasers have been used for underwater applications for quite some time. Probably the most widespread current use of lasers underwater is for transmission of telecommunications signals via fiber optics. The lasers used in such cases are generally semiconductor diode lasers operating at 800, 1300, or 1500 nanometer wavelengths -- all in the near-infrared portion of the spectrum.

    Submarines: Underwater Lasers Change Everything

September 10, 2009: Finally, there are lasers that can be used communicating underwater. This is done by using a laser pulse tuned to ionize water, and generate an acoustic pulse. Thus surface ships or aircraft could communicate with suitably equipped subs.

Lasers Could Find Friend or Foe Submarines Underwater

May 25, 2009 · Lasers Could Find Friend or Foe Submarines Underwater. Playing with lasers underwater is nothing new for the U.S. Navy, but previous experiments used larger lasers and could only thermally heat the water without the pulse effect. Much understanding of the acoustic pulse effect came from laser eye surgery, where scientists wanted to reduce the effect.
