Isn't that argument getting a little long in the tooth? LGBTQ people are not trying to deny you your right to a heterosexual marriage, why are you concerned with what they do in the privacy of their bedrooms or whether they choose to marry a member of the same sex. We live in a secular society and the non-secular cannot force their religious objections down the throats of those who simply don't acknowledge biblical admonitions regarding men not laying with men or women laying with women. Plural marriage is acceptable to many of those who follow the OT. It's not legal primarily because most men have a hard time maintaining a family with one wife, let alone several with dozens of children. Nevertheless, plural arrangements still exist. Consenting adults cannot be prevented from engaging in relationships with each other that don't suit the majority. You don't have to like it but really it's none of your business so long as they are living a law abiding life and paying their taxes.

Gays are freaks. You don't have agree with that. We both have the right to own businesses. You are the one with the problem. You and Standing Wolf.

If SA took a position that didn't represent its constituents, then that mayor and members of city council who supported that position will go down in the next election. If not, they represented their constituents. However I can pretty much guarantee that there will be those who share more of a libertarian ideology who will not appreciate the state's response.

I don't have a problem. This thread is about a state legislature and it's problem - with a city refusing to do business with a company that funds bigots and hatemongers. They want to make it illegal for the city to do that...in fact, they originally wanted to be empowered to bring criminal charges against city officials who refused to look the other way about such things. The bill's supporters pretend that it's about religion, specifically the Christian religion. It isn't.

Hatemonger is your opinion. As long as Chic-Fil-A is not doing anything to gays they have no reason to do anything. Freedom of speech. You know, the Constitution. That's what the DSA people wanted to do. Sorry if that bothers you.

Wearing that identity on your sleeve and associating your business with those identity politics will ultimately alienate a segment of your market and can as it is doing now, make trouble for government entities like municipalities that cannot be seen disregarding the sensibilities of their tax payers. Their relationship with constituents is very intimate as compared with state and federal politics. Any municipality large enough to have an airport is going to be far more diverse in every respect, than small towns and rural regions. So while a state government can play a numbers game, where their support can be vested in the aggregation of people in the small towns and regions, ignoring the urban vote, municipalities don't have that latitude. At the end of the day, a lot of money will be spent on this argument and ultimately, Chick-Fil-A may end up being the biggest loser because there are more franchises in cities than anywhere else.

Whether they end up the loser or not isn't up to the government.

While the final bill was stripped of language that would have permitted the state to prosecute local officials criminally, it contributes toward the blurring of the line between hate speech and religious expression - or, more exactly in this case, between support for hate speech and religious expression. If a municipality chose not to do business with a company whose owners advocated for organized atheism (pardon the oxymoron), or they were publicly opposed to interracial marriage on religious grounds (yes, those people do exist), or who contributed financial support to Muslim charities, would Texas legislators rush to clamp down on that move, as well? Chick-fil-A's owners continue to support groups and organizations that teach, preach and practice discrimination against LGBQT individuals; that is, of course, their right; but if locally elected representatives of the people choose not to do business with either those organizations or those who support them, the state should not require that they do so.

Can you cite the clause in your First Amendment that allows the criminalization of hate speech, and which allows congress to regulate religious expressions, the copy I have, the one ratified by the states as part of the Constitution, lacks those provisions.

I do not advocate for the criminalization of hate speech; I have always disapproved of measures along those lines that have been taken by some foreign governments. That isn't what is being discussed here. We are discussing a community government that does not want to get into bed, so to speak, with people who support bigotry and discrimination. No one is suggesting that the Chick-fil-A owners be sent to prison, or that any of the organizations that they support be criminally sanctioned in any way.
