2000 yr old marble head of Dionysus discovered under Rome

2000 yr old marble head of Dionysus discovered under Rome

They are finding stuff all the time in Rome. Every time I go there there are new excavations.

Archeologists in Rome have stumbled on a large marble head of Dionysus, also known as Bacchus, the ancient Roman god of wine, dance and fertility.

The discovery was made during excavations in the heart of the city, near the remains of the ancient Roman Forum.

The head would have belonged to a large statue of the god dating back to the imperial era.

The archaeologists were digging around the remains of a medieval wall when they found the marble head, which they believe represents Dionysus, who the Romans knew as Bacchus.

This is a cool find. MR V posted this too. The article MR V posted said they were not sure if it was Dionysus or not but it was a good guess. They found it in a wall, they said that they were using it as recyled building material. But I am not so sure about that. It is a really cool find either way, really pretty. These discoveries are always exciting.

This article said it was found in a medieval wall. Repurposed. Perhaps it was done when the city was facing an external threat. Otherwise I wouldn't think it would have been added to the wall.

Unless it was hid in the wall. There could be many different possibilities. Time capsule, That is nothing new. It could also be because someone did something wrong, and they parted out the statue and used it for fill. That did happen a lot in the past. Especially in Egypt. There are also the more hyperbole possibilities like it was cursed, and they buried it in the wall. Well it is fun to guess. It could have been any reason. We will never know. But it could have been anything. I like the story, what a cool find.

How much more is out there we do not know about?

    Almost everything.
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.
