Well, it's evolutionary (mutation, selection, replication) and not designed. Evolution is not progressive.
Interesting video whether you are interested in that or not.

I constantly lament not having extra hands to help me at this and that. Feet could help solve that problem, as one thought occurs to me that also might stir the imagination of entrepreneurs on this board: a foot replacement industry.
Just whack them off and replace them with artificial high-tech improvements, Wonderpeds, for which numerous accessories could be made for tree climbing, rope walking, banana-eating and working, as suggested, just like monkeys have.
Going to a concert? Don't forget to take your feet clapping accessories, and please don't swing on the chandeliers.

For some reason my cat doesn't shy away from my feet the way he does my hands.
He'll lay down in front of me, roll over and wait for me to rub his belly with my feet. For some reason that always ends up in his nipping at my toes.
As I walk around the house I pick up his toys and toss them with my feet for him to fetch.

The human foot is only recently evolved from a tree ' climbing prehensile tool.
Evolution has been affecting the foot configuration for only a few scant million years, after all. Hands have been under construction for much longer.
Also, the human foot is a highly specialized instrument, able to accept high velocity impact loads and yet minimize shocks to the brain.
It is still evolving, after all.
