How do I delete a damned post?

So I meant to add to my post via "Edit" and instead wound up creating a whole new post barely different than the first one. I went to delete it, hit delete then delete post. No go. So I erased it and saved it and that didn't work either.
What am i doing wrong?

Hit edit (on the post, not sure this works for a thread starting post), delete post and make sure you click the little dot in "delete" and hit ok or whatever.

It's kind of clunky and doesn't always work. I think if someone views it before you can delete it won't delete. But not sure.

I had already quasi fixed it by quoting my post and asking the questions I wanted to add in that manner. But I wanted to know for next time.
