As a child in Warsaw, my father had recurring nightmares about Hitlerjugend who were relentless in the use of bully tactics in order to force their fellow Polish "kinder" into the fold. Their tactics were very much like those of criminal gangs today.

Ethnic Germans in the east were in a pretty bad position once the war started. Undoubtedly, many were sympathetic to Nazi Germany particularly in Czechoslovakia but others identified with Poland, Romania etc. where they lived for generations or in some cases since the Middle Ages. You're of German extraction?

My family name is Prussian although my grandfather suggested the family had Dutch origins.

I sure recall the wood cutting I did and wood splitting enough for my home and my grandfathers.
at the time it was kinda fun

I enjoyed the hell out of wood splitting. It is great exercise and also acclimatizes you to all seasons.
When the weather was nicer, I loved watching the cats run and jump on the occasional wood chip as it went flying through the air.
A white fluffy kitty named Chloe and a Maine coon (my favorite little friend) named General Lee in pic3, would compete with each other as to who would get the chip.
The rest would sit on the woodpile and watch.

Nebraska was a nice adventure but after seven years it was time this adventurer started another one someplace else.

I have not done it for 15 years or so sense I lived in wva .
In ohio i was doing it at a young age. I recall my grandfather getting the state road garage to drop off a couple dump truck loads of hard maple around 1972 or 73 so we would have to cut trees on our property which was mostly hay feilds and pasture. I spent the summer with a maul and wedges splitting that up.
When I got older a hydraulic log splitter made the job easy in wva .It was homemade.I did it all summer long mostly from logging landing so only left overs were used. But i did it for my family and my grandfather and a freind that had no money no resources and was physically unable to do so.

Very nice!

I did expect to see an axe and not a sword on the stump, however.

We put a wood-burning fireplace in a small building we added to the corner of our courthouse and I love spending fall and winter evenings in there. There's just something about wood heat that you can't get from your HVAC.

I need to send my husband out to start chopping soon...
