Yes, they were but an invasion in 1943 would most likely have been a collosal failure. Not only would that have provided a great boost for Germany but could even have undermined America's will to fight in Europe. The strategy of Europe First might very well have given way to the Pacific Theater.

Tis is true, PJL, the Australians showed their grit at Gallipoli. Couple reminders. The initial force included many Irish born soldiers as well. New Zealand also showed true resolve and utter bravery. Secondly, many of the losses making it such a bloody battle were Turkish. They were obliterated in initial assaults against dug in British artillery. Last.....many more died and were lost by sickness and disease than combat. It was a virtual hellhole that Churchill sent these poor lads. The Australians more than proved their metal. No argument there.

The Gallipoli Campaign was one of the few offensives of WW1 that showed any real imagination and promise. Certainly it was bungled but it was not ill conceived, IMO.

Did show imagination. Was bungled. They should have withdrawn mush earlier.

I agree. Never reinforce failure. The opening stages were the most critical and it was then that that worst mistakes were made.
