I thought it was (in part) b/c the American bombers came over Omaha Beach at a right angle to it whereas they came over the other beaches parallel. The Omaha bombs fell way back. I think.

IMO the commander of the bombers over Omaha should have been tried for cowardice.
There was also a big difference in quality between their respective garrisons. Utah was defended by occupation troops who were poorly equipped. Many of them were actually Eastern Europeans. Omaha, OTOH, was defended by a relatively well trained outfit that was supposed to be transferred to the Eastern Front.

I don't think so because a right angle attack would not saturate the length of the beach. My post above was based on a documentary with first-hand accounts seen on a NatGeo TV D-Day marathon show. The doc went on to say that the Utah aircrew's commander back in England said that the sortie was a no-abort order in case of bad weather and visibility hence they flew beneath the clouds. Good leadership by the lead captain. The Omaha sortie lead-ship commander took the easy, safe and ineffective way out.

Another interesting fact is that US forces found out that killing a group's officer disabled a leaderless group from effecting a useful offence or defense. The enlisted Germans were unable to be effective without orders being given to them. I wonder if German units had non-coms in their hierarchy to take the place of officers that were killed. I would rather follow a salty sergeant instead of a book-trained military academy lieutenant.

The German army was generally superior on a tactical level.

Ah so. The Omaha bombers HAD to fly above the clouds because of aircraft type. Everything makes sense now. Thank you.

I don't believe we would ever need to.
