I have never heard of the hard water thing, but that can be overcome by installing a whole house water softener. They are common in many regions of the country.

Like I said, if you use salt to soften water, you're only adding more minerals to build up on your devices. Osmosis systems prevent most plumbing issues and gives you pure water. No minerals. Bottled water for cooking and drinking, if you feel the need. Purified water for everything else.
