    Special Meals

In my immediate family, if it's your birthday you get to choose what the evening meal is going to be, and other family members have to prepare it for you. I also get to choose on Father's Day, and the wife does on Mother's Day.

I've been thinking about what I want to have this coming Sunday, and it just hit me. Braised chicken livers and rice.

I always choose one of two "my Day" dinners to be made in my honor. Beef Stroganoff of Lasagna. If a dessert choice is offered it's strawberry shortcake using real pound cake as the base.

My Mother (R.I.P.) used to do that and I'd always pick her lasagna. Now, we'll go out to brunch and I'll pay.

    Hasenpfeffer from Hausner's in Baltimore.

Unfortunately not only is Hausner's out of business but the entire restaurant has been turned into a crack house on Eastern Avenue.

Mom used to do that when we were kids. Mine was her home made sauce for scetti, garlic bread, and baked custard for dessert.

Now the spouse buys a nice filet, some green beans and Jasmine rice.

Is that a version of Louisiana dirty rice?

I don't think so. All the dirty rice I've ever had - usually while humming 'Dirty Dirty Rice' by Timbuk3 - had everything in it diced up pretty small. This dish contains some pretty good-sized chunks of chicken liver - big enough to have to cut a time or two with the side of your fork.

I did a lot of rabbit and squirrel hunting in PA, used to make that and out of squirrel also - sour squirrel, basically the same recipe.

    Sauteed or deep fried?
