In Europe every stream was filled with water wheels used for every possible need from hammering metals to grinding grains and powering weaves. Today Europe relies on more than moving water.

Hydro dams are a wee bit more than a 'waterwheel'. While it may not be a primary source at this point, it produces enough on TVA lakes and rivers to pleasantly reduce electrical generation costs for the area.
