BREAKFAST, (lunch and dinner) on Mars

Just imagine, those who will be sent to colonize Mars will be among the most admired explorers ever, and they will all be vegans! At least they will be once they get there, so they should start getting used to it now.

What will they, or should they, eat for breakfast to stay healthy and enjoy themselves? Imagine that you have been chosen to be among the first group to colonize Mars, and you have used up all the supplies that were sent there in advance. Now you are on your own to produce your own food. What would you hope to have for breakfast? Would lunch and dinner be the same?

    Important points to remember:

*Being that vitamin B12 comes from animal protein, where will they get B12?

*Iodine is needed for proper thyroid function and is mostly contained in seafood and plants grown in iodine rich soil. How will they get enough iodine?

*Zinc comes mostly from animal sources, legumes, nuts, seeds and grains. Will they have those sources on Mars?

*Vitamin D3 comes mostly from animal sources and exposure to the sun. Will they have that?

After I got out of physical rehab in March, I had extensive blood testing done, and my Nurse Practitioner told me that my B-12 levels were dangerously low. (The words she actually used were that they were "in the toilet".) She told me to take this tiny little sublingual 500 mcg pill once or twice a day, which I did. A month later, my B-12 levels were too high and she told me to cut back on the pills to once or twice a week. You could pack several thousand of those little pills into a container no bigger than your fist. Especially with regular unmanned supply deliveries, it would seem a simple matter to keep at least that one vitamin up to acceptable levels in the colonists' systems.

It isn't the problem the OP seems to believe it to be.

I agree. Hopefully, B12 shouldn't be a problem if kept away from heat and light. I think B12 supplements might last about 2 years. And, should they use up all their supplements, they say the liver may have enough B12 in storage to last about 3 to 5 years.

Other supplements might not last as long. This from Google: ".....the window is only about a year for probiotics, liquids and oils, which are more fragile."

Any supplement that has a shelf life of one year will only have six months left by the time it gets to Mars.

As far as deliveries to Mars, it depends on what the stated goal is, which may be different depending on who you listen to. But I believe I have heard some say that they hope to be totally self sustaining at some point. No doubt you may have heard it said that we should begin to populate other planets in case something catastrophic happens to earth. That's pretty much what I had in mind when I posted, not that I personally have any goal for Mars.

So perhaps the question should be: Will they ever be self sustaining? I think it's highly doubtful.

A quick search just reminded me of Perchlorate in the soil: "....Perchlorate is toxic to humans, causing thyroid problems and even death. Humans on the Red Planet might breath it in from dust that infiltrated habitats, and growing food with it would be dangerous."

Farmers on Mars will need to remove any perchlorate from the Martian soil before using it. One way is to rinse the soil, since perchlorate dissolves in water. Another, more enticing way is to use perchlorate-eating bacteria, which produce oxygen as a metabolic byproduct. That might protect the colonists from serious health problems while also bolstering their breathable air supply. https://www.skyandtelescope.com/astr...-martian-soil/
