I disagree Adelaide, there is no reason NOT to ask on the census if your a citizen of the USA or not, because if your not, you should not be on our census because you are here illegally and if not you are still not entitled to vote

What I took from that is the US needs to put a pause on immigration we are taking on the burden for the rest of the world.

Representation in Congress is determined through the total population of each state. Citizenship isn't addressed. This is a fact and not arguable.

Absolutely, but the ACS is pretty well established through the Census Bureau and not prone to the errors commonly found in sampling. Trial and error... since the 1960s... it's a better tool for determining the number of immigrants in the country than the actual census. A census will not be accurate or as accurate as something like the ACS because people will be discouraged from answering honestly. There has also not been enough time to test what adding this question could do to the census; typically, the government runs a bunch of tests and simulations and tries to figure out what short and long-term consequences might exist if they change the format. On a census, you do not want to reduce the response rate (which happens if any question is introduced, nonetheless a controversial one) because it is supposed to be an actual number. The Census Bureau already has the ACS, which means adding this question is redundant, and then all of the above. It is $#@!ing around with something that doesn't need to be $#@!ed around with. Yeah - next year. Has not felt that long, but I guess time flies.

The first problem is simply sampling error. The CPS is large (about 80,000 households in the March supplement), and the ACS is huge (about 3 million people). But even surveys that big have significant margins of error when measuring small subgroups. The errors are even bigger when trying to measure change from one year to the next. The even bigger issue is that some groups, including immigrants, are hard to count for various reasons — they’re less likely to respond to surveys, less likely to speak English, more likely to have informal or temporary living arrangements, among others. Counting undocumented immigrants is particularly difficult, because many fear census takers will report them to the government (they won’t).
