We have a solar minimum just around the corner, in fact, NASA thinks it might have already started. With all the conversation about what's happening here on the planet, many seem to forget that the greatest heating and cooling catalyst is our sun. Now that it's slipping into a solar minimum, we're going to be cooling off. How much and for how long are not yet known. Some predict one year, as what happened in 2009, others predict 70 years. One thing is sure, while the sun's activity is low, the lower temps will counter (at least to some extent) any warming trends we have going on due to greenhouse gasses.

What was the scientific consensus in the 1970s regarding future climate? The most cited example of 1970s cooling predictions is a 1975 Newsweek article "The Cooling World" that suggested cooling "may portend a drastic decline for food production."

"Meteorologists disagree about the cause and extent of the cooling trend… But they are almost unanimous in the view that the trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century."

A 1974 Time magazine article Another Ice Age? painted a similarly bleak picture:

"When meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe, they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassandras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age."

However, these are media articles, not scientific studies. A survey of peer reviewed scientific papers from 1965 to 1979 show that few papers predicted global cooling (7 in total). Significantly more papers (42 in total) predicted global warming (Peterson 2008). The large majority of climate research in the 1970s predicted the Earth would warm as a consequence of CO2. Rather than 1970s scientists predicting cooling, the opposite is the case.

Climatologists predicted an ice age. Their kids are predicting the opposite. Why believe the ones today when the ones then were so wrong. I was an adult and the 70's weren't childhood memories.

First, there never was a prediction of global cooling from climate scientists. Even in the 1970s, the overwhelming consensus was that global warming would occur. Only the few people who later become the hardcore global warming deniers (mainly Reid Bryson) were pushing the cooling theory.

Second, the Bush administration came up with "climate change" as a new term, because they thought "global warming" sounded like something that would require action.

If you had ever looked at something besides conspiracy blogs, you would have known such basic history.

The main point here, however, is the way that violent psychopaths are heavily over-represented in the denier contingent.

Why are they so violent? Because they've lost catastrophically in the battle of ideas, and they know it. They see no hope of winning at the ballot box, so they're threatening to assassinate people, in the hopes of intimidating them into silence.
