In most situations, police simply cannot ignore their own safety or the safety of others because someone is "mentally disturbed". Some basic training for officers in how to deal effectively with the mentally ill is probably a good idea, but the idea, proposed by some, of having a special squad of officers ready at all times to respond to such calls is impractical at best. The individual's mental issues might cause them to be catatonic, curled up into a corner, or - as in this case - running all over the neighborhood with a metal bar in his hands; there isn't a single behavior that one always has to deal with - the illness might manifest itself in any of a hundred different ways. And, again, police can't be expected to ignore or discount the threat of a metal pipe-wielding suspect because of his mental problems.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.” - Robert E. Howard

"Only a rank degenerate would drive 1,500 miles across Texas and not eat a chicken fried steak." - Larry McMurtry

Its really unfortunate when police run into a disturbed individual, what people dont read or see, is that these individuals can become uncontrollably violent at times and get quite enhanced strength, they bite, they break fingers, they spit, people dont think about police having to protect themselves from aids and other diseases along with their physical person, all these things are swirling around in a cops head.

Police dont want to hurt people and they certainly realize when a person is mentally not right but they are also very much aware of what they are capable of at times also. You cant pick and choose which one you think is going to get violent, because you just never now, therefore you must treat them all as becoming violent

    Good Post btw @Standing Wolf

My brother was a New Orleans PD cop and was ambushed by guy he knew- paralyzed in an electric wheel chair (waist down). His police cruiser was shot up and he took the guy down. Never got over it.
