She is super sweet. We named her "Snickers".

    And yes. Purebred.
Congrats, had a wiener dog when I was a wee lad.

I have a video of a skinny female in my back yard. She was near starvation. We fed her. She looked better in the Spring.

I'm gonna feed these too.....some lead. Lol. All kidding aside, I'm not really a hunter, and I loathe the thought of shooting what looks like a beautiful dog, but, we have cats.

I have one cat. I don't kill anymore. I feed, tend, and care for the wildlife.

I grew up on a farm in west Michigan. We pheasant hunted every fall. Our dachshund (Blackie) loved to go hunting with us. His short legs and just being smart kept him close and always in front. He out hunted every fancy purebred hunting dog anyone ever brought to the farm. Every one. I learned to follow him because he always found the birds.
He was also fearless. We had a racoon invasion once. They were after our chickens. My dad shot and wounded one of them and Blackie ran in and finished it off. He was amazing.

My wife walks our two dogs early in the morning, one at a time, and Lily - who we think might be a pitbull-German shorthair something, with possibly some greyhound, and who has excellent eyesight - usually spots a bunny or two and wants desperately to go "play" with them. She definitely has some kind of sight-hound genes, because she can spot a bunny more than a block away. I don't think Gemma, my sweet, somewhat near-sighted pit-shepherd-boxer mix, has ever seen a bunny in her life. Nothing wrong with her sense of smell, though. The wife tells me that Gemma can identify every single spot where Lily has peed that morning and will add her own scent to it; some kind of pack thing, I suspect.

I will occasionally see a coyote trot through the neighborhood in broad daylight, like it believes that if it acts casual people will think it's just a dog.

In the country you need to shoot coyotes to keep your livestock alive. When I was living in South Dakota you would see dead coyotes hanging on barbed-wire fencing to serve to other coyotes to stay away. At night on a full moon you could see them on the hillside of ranches, easy kills. When you make a living off your livestock, killing coyotes comes easy.
Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I digress....

I had a miniature dachshund once. Named her Snitzel because being a female she didn't have a weiner. On the second day we had her we couldn't find her in the house after searching about a half hour for her. Thought maybe our daughter had let her out by accident and she had run off. We went to work and I made up a bunch of missing dog posters. When we got home she met us at the door on the inside of the house. Next morning same thing. This time we knew she was in the house so we searched in even unlikely places. We finally found her burrowed in one of my wife's shoes!! No, my wife doesn't have overly large feet, it was just a very small dog.

One thing you need to know is dachshunds have a congenital defect in their spines. They look so cute sitting up like a doorstop. However, that has a tendency to injure their backbones. Snitzel developed such an injury and we were told by the vet it was an extremely expensive operation to correct with no guarantee it would work. She was about 2 years old at the time. We decided to keep her as comfortable as possible until the end. All she would do was lay on the couch and walk very little. In the meantime we got our first Jack Russell's. This dog harassed her so much and kept her moving around so much her back problem disappeared and she lived for another 12 years.

They are kind and loving little dogs and I hope you enjoy her for years to come.
