I never used to pay much attention to other people's dogs. Since we got ours, though, I find myself watching on my way to work for folks walking their dogs - trying to identify their breed(s) and noting the interaction of the dogs with their people. We regularly watch several dog-related shows - 'Pitbulls and Parolees', 'Lucky Dog', and the Arizona Humane Society program that's on every Saturday morning, featuring animals available for adoption. I'll always be a cat person, but I have really become a dog person as well.

I had a miniature dachshund once. Named her Snitzel because being a female she didn't have a weiner. On the second day we had her we couldn't find her in the house after searching about a half hour for her. Thought maybe our daughter had let her out by accident and she had run off. We went to work and I made up a bunch of missing dog posters. When we got home she met us at the door on the inside of the house. Next morning same thing. This time we knew she was in the house so we searched in even unlikely places. We finally found her burrowed in one of my wife's shoes!! No, my wife doesn't have overly large feet, it was just a very small dog.

One thing you need to know is dachshunds have a congenital defect in their spines. They look so cute sitting up like a doorstop. However, that has a tendency to injure their backbones. Snitzel developed such an injury and we were told by the vet it was an extremely expensive operation to correct with no guarantee it would work. She was about 2 years old at the time. We decided to keep her as comfortable as possible until the end. All she would do was lay on the couch and walk very little. In the meantime we got our first Jack Russell's. This dog harassed her so much and kept her moving around so much her back problem disappeared and she lived for another 12 years.

They are kind and loving little dogs and I hope you enjoy her for years to come.

Still unsure of her surroundings but already navigating the stairs well. Smart but unassuming. Medium energy and low upkeep. Small dog but big personality.

She is super sweet. We named her "Snickers".

And yes. Purebred.

Shes sounds adorable! Couple of things...don't let her jump off anything, not even a couch. Those long backs have a tendency to get hurt. One more thing, when she gets older, she will think she is a big dog, and don't be surprised if she thinks she can hold her own against a large breed. She will have no fear. And, good luck getting her to come back if she sees a rabbit. She lives for the chase!
