    Max isnt doing well

My little big boy max, is going blind, vet says hes just about blind in one eye and losing sight in the other to cataracts and his back legs are giving him alot of trouble.

Hes been glued to me for weeks and Ive tripped over him and im scared to death im going to hurt him. So I brought him to the vet for a total workup, blood etc.

Hes doing relatively well for his age the vet says and he gave me a prescription to keep him calmer. Ill see if it works.

Max too old to have the cataract removed on the most promising side? It would be a big help if it's practical.

I'm sorry you are going through this. It's hard to watch pets get older or to get sick.

Did they give you amitryptiline to calm him? My cat takes Prozac (long story) but amitryptiline was the other option. Also, he eats a prescription food that has ingredients meant to calm, and they offer a dog version - would that be better than medication? It's Royal Canin's "Calm" dog food. Cat is on the Prozac for three months while I transfer him over to the "calm" food, and then that should be enough to keep him from being totally neurotic. The food can be a bit pricey, but it is mixed in with regular food (I do 1/3 "calm" and 2/3 normal) so it takes a while to go through it.

Vet gave me a prescription he said try it a week if it doesnt help he will give me something else. Im waiting on the pharmacy to call its ready. I give him a couple of things to calm him, they used to help but not anymore.

What sucks is not being able to help him.

I have been there Common. In my case at age 13 ( the dogs age)we had to decide what was best for the dog. We were with her at the peaceful end. It sounds like you may come to that point, but I hope Max gets better. If that cannot happen I hope the end is peaceful and you don't have to make the choice.

I'm so sorry Common. Sounds like your little big guy is sticking to you like glue for maybe visual aid. It sucks that he's going blind but just knowing what the issue is will help you find ways to deal with it. You're going to have to be his eyes now.

Yea, sorry to hear. Want to trade for a pair of aging parents?

Another tough one. In one of my careers I was the Director iof Social Services (not what it sounds like) at a hospital/nursing home. I know youi did not ask for advise but because of the problems I have seen I'll throw two things out for you to take or leave as you wish, although you may very well have already addressed them.

I'd advise you to NEVER promise to not put them in a home. Given modern medicine's ability to keep debilitated people alive for years and depending on finances it can become impossible top stay home.

My other advise would be to make sure they have their advance directives taken care of.
