In Syracuse in the 70s the was on Salina Street running south from downtown, a two mile stretch through the black ghetto with no grocery store, then another mile where the shading started to civilize, with a store on the corner of Brighton, then another two miles to the A&P, then three more miles to the Green Hills in Nedrow.
That was it.
Then the A&P closed because the south side of the city was turning to $#@!.
Then the owner of the furthest north grocery fire bombed the store on Brighton...I kid you not..to secure a regional monopoly.
My parents were driving all the way out to DeWitt to buy groceries, since there was more competition in tgat area and the prices were better.
