That's a novel and a film from the 1930s though. They did a color remake in the late 70s I think but I'm not sure if you wuld look it. Can't hurt I guess. Anyway, the main character of the novel/film was a volunteer in 1914 (the first year of the war). Remarque was a conscript in 1917. He projects his own view of the war onto millions of men who did not share it. It's considered a classic but when kids read it they will get the impression that Remarque's is the only legitimate perrception of the conflict. The sane is true with movies like Platoon. Oh, Vietnam was awful...everyne knows that. Didn't you see Platoon?

Well, don't most realistic war movies make war seem awful?
The Vietnam War in particular does look really crappy in a lot of movies. Even besides the brutal combat, the conditions seemed terrible, all that rain and marching in the jungle, the heat and humidity. It just all seemed terrible.
Combat is awful to most people I'd imagine but that doesn't necessarily mean that war is without purpose, value, or a positive meaning in people's lives. Both Stone and Remarque depict war as a menaingless waste of human life. That's arguable but the important thing is that that's not the way millions of men actually felt about their experiences.

For example, I'm sure MMC is proud of what he did.
