Big Pharma Fail: No Evidence Of Added Benefit In Most New Drugs, Study Finds

Yet they sure cost a lot of money. Note this was a German study.

There seems to be a new drug to treat anything and everything these days, but are these medications as effective as they claim to be? A new study has concluded that the answer to that question is no. Furthermore, researchers say that international drug development processes, standards, and policies are fundamentally broken and must be reformed.

According to the study performed at the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care, more than half of the new drugs entering the German healthcare system show absolutely no added benefit.

Between 2011 and 2017, researchers examined 216 drugs that passed regulatory approval and entered the German market. Most of these assessed drugs were also approved by the European Medicines Agency for widespread use throughout greater Europe.

Alarmingly, only a quarter of those drugs showed any significant medical added benefit based on the available evidence. What’s more, 16% showed even a minor added benefit, and a whopping 58% of studied drugs did not showany added benefit over standard patient care.

Drug companies usually test their drugs on relatively healthy people who are not taking any drugs other than the drug that's being tested. The new drug may do very well until it becomes available on the market. Then the real test begins because there will be many more tens of thousands or maybe millions of people taking the drug. And many of them could have multiple health issues and therefore could be taking multiple drugs with unknown drug interactions. So what works well for one person may work poorly for another because everyone is different. That's always a risk.

I'm not familiar with the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care. I'm also not familiar with Germany's health care system. Could there be bias in their studies? It may be Germany's health care system against big pharma and compared to the U.K. it might be considered a new version of a death panel. It's hard to tell what's really going on.

This might help to explain what's going on. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Healthcare_in_Germany

Germany has universal multi-payer health care - 77% government funded and 23% privately funded. "Germany has the world's oldest national social health insurance system...."

Bismark started it as a reaction to growing interest in communism.

Let's say a drug company has a drug for cancer to prolong life for someone who's stage 4 and terminal. Then some years later they try to develop a new drug to prolong life even more. So they spend enormous sums to develop this new drug. But as it turns out it only extends life, on average, 1or 2 months longer than the previous drug. The drug company wants to get some return on its investment. It might want to charge $10,000 a month for the drug (based on projected sales or demand) and of course people will complain. It's not all that much better than the previous drug and has terrible side effects. What should the drug company do?

I think this might be what some countries, like Germany, are against. They want expensive research to be done, and better drugs to be developed, but they don't want to pay the price.
