Being seriously bi-polar helped me in my career. In a manic phase I could and would do more work in 3-4 days than some did in a month. I had a career defining "Eureka" moment in a manic phase. It hit me like a brick how to partner constants and variables with units of currency , define a parameter and apply the set against a diminishing certainty, time. It was a manner in which I devised a way to "bend" the value of a number and/or set of equations. The downside was I would get in moods where I didnt want to talk to anyone for a few days too. But..."bending" which I used to comprise synthetic neutral, shorts and longs became my stock in trade. Poetry in numeric motion. ..

Some people live with it and try to act normal, just look at several members here like Ransom, mister d, captdon, and tahyuaman. We should do more to help them feel normal.

Many people don't understand when the disability is not physical. Some accept it or learn about it and others just assume that if it not physical and has not happened in their family than it isn't a real disability. A very childish attitude which is too common. There is likely no mental disability which is as over used and fraud related as the proverbial bad back. Yet some people really do require disability because of their back even though they have good days.

Something to keep in mind... quite often, unless you have to deal with something on a regular basis, you don't know other subjects to the degree that someone else who does deals with it on a regular basis. This applies to not only disabilities, but diseases, businesses, and virtually every subject you could imagine.

Sympathy is all well and good, but cannot take the place of intimate knowledge. And just because you have experienced one or several, does not mean you have experienced the full degree of a spectrum.

It is not necessarily a 'childish attitude'... you might as well say that even though someone is an accountant, they must learn all about Quantum theory or they are being childish....
