While I agree with that in principal, the treatment of mental illness is way behind the treatment of physical illness or illness thought to be merely physical. I doubt we could have accomplished much with treatment and society has to be protected. Even facilities for the criminally insane are largely like prisons. I'm not at all confident that we can treat this kind of crazy successfully.

At least they would have known that he was still a danger and kept him locked up.
