$1200 a month for a bunk bed in a shared space in LA - more in San Fran

$1200 a month for a bunk bed in a shared space in LA - more in San Fran

Rents are so high in LA and San Fran that a new business started. It builds what is essentially a barracks room where people get a bed, tv, and locker.

With the cost of rent continuing to rise, some Americans are taking unusual measures to find a place to sleep.

In Los Angeles and San Francisco, where prices are particularly exorbitant, people have taken to renting bunk beds in communal homes.

PodShare, which provides 10 to 15 co-ed bunkbeds in six locations across California, is hoping to help solve the affordable housing crisis.

The beds can be rented from $35 to $50 a night, which amounts to between $1,050 and $1500 for one month.

It's no secret that housing prices have rapidly spiked over the last decade and incomes have not kept up

One 2018 study published found that only about one-third of millennials currently own homes.

This is fewer than the number of Generation Xers and baby boomers who owned homes when they were the same age.

And a study conducted by Harvard University this year found that one-in-three Americans can't afford to pay rent.

Read about that. You get a bunk and other shared spaces for the $1200, so it's not so bad. But the problem is the high cost of housing and rent. Which is caused by the city regulating building so as to protect the richer folks.

Also you rent a pod in the system and can move from location to location, provided there's a space for you.

In Japan that is fairly common. Even familiy men will rent and live in during the week, go home weekends.

This one doesn't look all that bad, I guess.

But that Japanese "capsule" makes me all claustrophobic just looking at the picture.

Where does that top picture - the exterior view of the building - come from? It reminds me of some dystopian sci-fi scene.

They are called Japanese Micro Apartments.

They also have these. They are in Hong Kong.

They call them the OPod Tube House.

I live in a non-regulated Public Service District, not Charleston. Rents here are $1800 for a three bedroom place.Nothing is cheap anyplace, regulated or not.
