There are going to be methodology concerns with this form of research, but this is interesting. In my opinion, most people should be getting everything they need in their diet and maybe should take a multivitamin and only additional supplements if a physician says to (like vitamin D or B12, etc.). It's a colossal waste of money by and large and little to no evidence-based data showing that it actually makes a difference. I have met zero physicians who think supplements are a good idea unless you are part of a "special" population somehow (age, gender, medical diagnosis, etc.).

And some supplements are dangerous. Some can have psychoactive effects, while certain brands have very questionable ingredients (like random trace amounts of erectile dysfunction medication?). Things that seem like they should be harmless are not so harmless - and the FDA has little oversight, and since they are over the counter everywhere, people assume it is safe.

    Gah.
I think you need to do your research and some are appropriate for some people. I am on a few , mostly due to gastric bypass surgery. I think the vitamins would be useful to most depending upon deit. B,C and D are needed by many. On the other hand people who have a virtual closet full are wasting their money but maybe the placebo effect ( something so real it has to be taken into account in drug trial) is worth it to them?
BTW, being that this board is largely populated by men you picked a really poor example of what "dangerous" supplements might have in them. LOL

For an example Kratom which can help fight pain and possibly assist with opiod withdrawal and has a buzz level if you want to take enough with much less danger than is associated with opiates .Yet the government keeps trying to ban it but keeps getting shot down as there is no evidence that it is dangerous enough to ban.

They're trying to do an end run around the lack of evidence by pressuring Indonesia to ban the cultivation of kratom. Most of the Kratom on the global market comes frrzom Indonesia so this would effectively ban kratom in the US. The ban appears tentative and the American Kratom Association has been fighting back with some Congressional support. See recent article below.

Most people who take vitamins do little more than fortify their urine.

That's been my understanding of it, and if you have conflicting combinations they can negate or offset.

But I'm not really sure, I don't have a great understanding of how this works but the market seems really sales driven and I think a lot of people just take stuff and assume it works.

It depends on what they are taking and if they have a deficiency of something for whatever reason. You won't piss out fat-soluble vitamins and can overdoes on them if you take too much.

It definitely is sales driven and I really do think most of it is either unnecessary or useless. Peter makes a good point regarding the fact that some supplements are even dangerous. You can poison yourself with too much Vitamin D because your body stores it. But deficiency is rare overall.

I watch these people take Emergen-C, which has 1000 mg of Vitamin C, and I tell them you should probably drink that in 3 servings spread throughout the day. People don't seem to understand that there is a limit to how much C or any water soluble vitamin your body can absorb in a single sitting.

I've limited my protein servings to no more 30 grams per meal if I can help it. Significantly more than that is likely to be a waste as far as protein systhesis is concerned.

I said in my post that there are special populations that do require supplements, usually based on age, gender or medical condition. Everyone else? Most of it is useless crap that serves no purpose. On the extreme end of things, some products can be potentially harmful rather than just useless.

And fair enough about the ED medication, haha.

Most people taking massive amounts of vitamins are simply creating expensive urine and some are endangering their health. There is no shortcut to a healthy diet.

Their commitment to banning Kratom is not justified by any problems it has caused because those are few and far between. The FDA is however big pharmas lap dog. Hell with the opiod crisis you would think Kratom would be embraced as a much safer option for some. Some of the powers that be are fine with opiate deaths as long as the sales keep up. They sure as hell don't want people detoxing without big pharmas help. This situation should be exposed to the American people
