I answered this only only because i have friends in SA.
I usually don't answer numbers I don't recognize, but some of the managers where I work will call. I let most ring through, and if they actually need to talk to me, they'll leave a message. If no message, then they didn't need to talk to me.

The most common scam I get is from barely-English-speaking guys who tell me they're from Microsoft and that my version of Windows is corrupted. If I'm really busy, I'll just hang up at that point, but sometimes I'll let them ramble for awhile and then tell them they ought to be ashamed of themselves -- that they ought to get a real job.
I asked them how they got their felony conviction. (Many ex-felons find work in telemarketing).

That is what I do. More often than not the ringer on my phone is off.

Really? I'll have to remember that one!

I have gotten that one, too.

Even more frequently, I get a pitch for healthcare insurance.

I know police departments are getting more and more technical, but still do not believe any of them have hired ROBOCOP just yet.

It is an obvious scam, and there is no way in hell I am ever calling that number, but do think it prudent I call the Sheriff and let them know about it.

I can PM the rest of the number if anyone would like to investigate it out of curiosity, but did not think it prudent to post the complete number here as I am sure as soon as you dial it, they will have hacked into something.

I am posting this also as a heads up.
If you have caller ID, don't answer the phone. If you do by chance answer it make sure you report it to the state attorney generals office. I think they'd be the ones to investigate it.

Think 3rd party for 2024 folks. Clean up America.

Once I tell you that we agree to disagree there will be no more discussion between us in the thread so please don't waste your time continuing to argue your points because I will not respond.

On three of my phones, I do have caller ID; and if it reads "anonymous"--or if it is from out-of-state (or even out-of-city)--I simply lift up the receiver, and then put it down again (in other words, I hang up abruptly).

On the fourth phone--it is retro--there is no caller ID; so I just answer it. (And then, if it is a spam call, I immediately hang up.)

Oh, if there is actually a real, live person on the other end--and there seldom is; it is usually just a robocall--I will ask, before hanging up: "Don't you have something better to do with your time than to harass others?"

Sometimes I will answer and set the phone next to the radio.
