This is a new spin. I can tell you that before we lost Maggie, the pecking order in my home listed me as last and that dog as 1st or 2nd, depending on whether P1 or P2 were home from college. If they were both home, Maggie was first!!!

No. That gal is off the wall. Your Maggie looked like a sweetheart and my four Saints, one border collie, and four cats are all precious to me. If someone hadn't bred my Saints (oh wait, I bred them), I'd be lost. They serve as my companions, my best friends and my protectors. In the spring, they shed like mad and I'm brushing them and vacuuming the house multiple times per day, but as their loud snore reverberate through the walls, I'm comforted and reminded how good life is with them by my side. I work from an office in my home, so they become my my assistants, nuzzling me if I scream in frustration (I do that occasionally) and coming to sit by me, $#@! their heads and look at me expectantly when I'm conducting a phone interview. The border collie is a character and he was given to us by our daughter and most of the cats were abandoned nearby and found us. I could not give even one of the up. It breaks my heart when we lose one, but the time we have together is precious.

OP, as long as the dems don't oulaw pets, do as you like. I can't have pets as I don't have space, $$ or time for them. I get my pet fix on the street petting other people's dogs.

Pets are the last connection that most people have with nature. I think it would be a terrible thing if we stopped keeping our four legged companions. We would simply become divorced from the other life forms on the planet. When that happens, as it often does with people who have never bonded with animals, there is a tendency to trivialize their existence and see them as things rather than beings. You know, when you live with an animal, that it thinks. It may not think as broadly and deeply as we do, but it thinks. Its needs are simpler than ours, but it's obvious when an animal is content or when it's depressed, fearful or angry. They respond to our emotions as we respond to their's. Dogs in particular are almost as emotional as we are and perhaps that's why they are so bonded to us as a species. Despite all of the horribly cruel things that people do in relation to their pets or other animals (for which they should be punished), we need them to ground us and keep us connected to the planet on which we live.
In quoting my post, you affirm and agree that you have not been goaded, provoked, emotionally manipulated or otherwise coerced into responding.

I have two dogs, a 10 year old Chihuahua and a 4 month old Jack Russell Terrorist. I can guarantee that if people did not keep animals as pets neither of these two breeds would ever exist. I can also guarantee that both of them live far better lives in my household then they would in the wild. I feed them well, I take them to the vet for all of their shots and other medical needs, they live in the house and go out for exercise and when nature calls (hopefully this will be a usual occurrence for Petunia the Jack Russell in the very near future). They sleep in the bed, they ride in the car, they are treated like children.

    And here's Lucy!!!!

Border Collie/Boxer(?) mix. She has an endearing little under bite....bottom teeth are always visible. Rescue with a not great history/past. But she has been so spoiled rotten for the last six years we hopefully have made up for some of it.

I never liked dogs until my wife brought home Mr. Gompers one day. Now I cannot imagine life without him.
