Post Should We Stop Keeping Pets?

Should We Stop Keeping Pets? -- Recent research into animals’ emotional lives has cast doubt on the ethics of petkeeping. The reality is people have pets in the millions. The question is: how we can help them care for them correctly and appropriately?

This is a new spin. I can tell you that before we lost Maggie, the pecking order in my home listed me as last and that dog as 1st or 2nd, depending on whether P1 or P2 were home from college. If they were both home, Maggie was first!!!

I lost my buddy on Memorial Day. I would not have traded him for anything. But it left us a "man down" as a result. Now the Jack is starting to act weird since there is no one and no other dog around part of the day to keep him company.
I am getting another rescue dog next week with the realization that I'm not looking to replace him, as such. But we've always had two or three dogs and now we are down to the one.
Will post pics when we get him.

If we stopped keeping pets how will the thousands of damaged war vets and others get through the day without their service animals?

I have two dogs, a 10 year old Chihuahua and a 4 month old Jack Russell Terrorist. I can guarantee that if people did not keep animals as pets neither of these two breeds would ever exist. I can also guarantee that both of them live far better lives in my household then they would in the wild. I feed them well, I take them to the vet for all of their shots and other medical needs, they live in the house and go out for exercise and when nature calls (hopefully this will be a usual occurrence for Petunia the Jack Russell in the very near future). They sleep in the bed, they ride in the car, they are treated like children.

There is a relationship between humans and pets. While I enjoy dogs, I am more a cat person. My one cat, who passed back in February, was actually more a 'service' animal than some that I've seen trying to be passed off as service animals. If I was sleeping, and my blood glucose went low, he would wake me up. If I was quiet or sad, he would cuddle. If it was an ordinary day, he would be a typical cat, with complete and total disregard for the humans, unless he was hungry....

"a cat's purr is better than a dozen aspirin."

So the answer to your question is, it is a mutually satisfying relationship.

This kook stuff. An animal's right of self-determination...

A pet always has the option to run away and live wild or adopt a different human. So "keeping" is sort of a misnomer.
