People like a sense of belonging to a community, however religion is not the only way that people can commune. It just has the advantage of playing on the faith of its membership to compel them to commune whether they really want to or not.

The biggest enemy of community today is our lifestyles which often involve long commutes to work and working from home. People often don't have the time to get to know their immediate neighbors, let alone members of the community at large and there is a finite number of people that people will consider a part of their "community".

I have lived in the suburbs and in the city. TBH, there is more community in the city because people spend less time going to and from work, so they have more time to get to know the neighbors. What I do know is that in small towns where people don't necessarily share religion, there is a much greater sense of community. It comes from familiarity and the idea that they share in the success or failure of the town and have much greater say in its development. If there is town hall meeting, virtually everyone is there. It's really about numbers, proximity and time.

Historically family and community rose out of religion if they can even be separated. Once again, I think, you are imposing the present on the past.

The present is what is relevant, the past is past. You can't bemoan the differences between then and now without recognizing that we are not living in the same circumstances.
In quoting my post, you affirm and agree that you have not been goaded, provoked, emotionally manipulated or otherwise coerced into responding.

God and my cats were the only nurturing I got as a kid and teenager.
Now I finally have all three, but had to marry into a caring family.

I don't think we should give up on things just yet.

So you admit you project the present onto the past. Do you really think such projection serves as the basis of any argument?

As far as "bemoaning" goes, the problem as I see it is the present rejection of the past leaves us with no foundation on which to build a future.

You assume its a rejection of the past, rather than a function of the way many people have to live today.

The enlightened liberal project did reject family, community and God, and replaced it with the state. This is historical fact. We can, as jimmyz did earlier, question the degree to which this project has been successful so far, but not the historical fact.

What are you even talking about?

No one has killed God! He's here as always.
Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I digress....
