Actually, no, it's not. We live in the world as it is now and share today's views and easily fall prey to an anachronistic projection of today onto the premodern world.

We all need to belong somewhere. Somewhere besides online.

Well that's very true. And I think that's it precisely, we all need a place to belong and that was once defined mainly by our relationships with God, family and community, and is now defined abstractly by the state and social media and online shopping in a cybercommunity.

Dunno about community - my community is mainly my school and my friends, and they are fine.

All modern societies are based on the rule of law (whether we agree with all those laws or not) and any society based on religious laws is in big trouble. Have a look at places like Saudi Arabia and Iran if you want to see what I mean.

What some people don't like about modern, liberal societies - like the USA, the UK, Australia, Canada, and most European societies - is that they aren't as free to be total $#@!s to people that don't think like them, or people they don't like, or people they consider inferior to them (like brown people), as they were in the 'good old days'.
I think they are talking about these things as cornerstones of society. The concept of God can do great or terrible things regardless of it's reality. The civic dedication to a community to where your town or school is important too you.
Basically it's about belonging, taking pride in, that sort of thing. It can be a positive powerful force. A connectedness.
