We Killed God, Family, And Community — And Now It’s Killing Us

How we got here has been a long process of the liberal project. I'm not sure there's a solution. You can't go back, you can't undo the damage.

We Killed God, Family, And Community — And Now It’s Killing Us

Once upon a time, you had meaning. You knew you had meaning because you had a mom and a dad who told you so, a God who loved you, and a community that needed you.

Once upon a time, if something happened to you, a significant number of people would mourn your death — not only because you were a good person and a good friend, but also because the community would suffer without your presence and skills. Now, the vast majority of people can barely count on one hand the number of people whose life would be truly altered by their passing.

For the most part, it can easily feel like no one cares about you anymore. Your skills are ubiquitous, you have no true community, and God doesn’t exist. So what, you may ask, is exactly the point?

We have created a society that now offers almost none of the things that make people truly happy. Family, community, spiritual belonging — these are the foundational and primal building blocks of human happiness, and they are rapidly disappearing.

With the destruction of the family, the church, and the community, the reasons people have traditionally had for their very existence are in danger of receding into the past. And the outcome is predictable: isolation, depression, anxiety, despondency, drug abuse, and death....
Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire. ― Gustav Mahler

I have to disagree with the author as far as my family and community goes. We are still very tight. Many people still care for their neighbors and strangers still come out of the blue in times of need.

The author's thesis might be more relevant in the younger populace?

Art thou every retard among us related to thine uncle or mistress by way of moral or illegitimate rendezvous? Thus, we are one side of the other's coin by luck or pluck. - Jimmyz

There is much truth to that. I have no data to support this statement so its simply my opinion but it appears to me that toxicity in family, community, society rises in an exponential fashion once it begins. The good or rebuilding of the aforementioned appears (if at all) as a very slow gradual process. In fact the " rebuilding" of family , community etc seems to be a fairly toxic process in its own right. It takes prisoners, has its own set of casualties and leaves wounds that never truly heal.

    Point well taken!

He's more extreme than I might be in terms of the decline of family, community, spiritual belonging. I'm close to my family. But I think he's got the right cause of our decline.

I noticed when I first started posting at tpf that you often made " we" or "us" statements. That suggested a strong family / societal unit as your environment. You once said " a lot of us wear sandals" another time you said "they say dad you're too old for Limp Bizkit" as just a few examples..thats awesome jimmyz. It speaks very well of you and yours.

Sadly, it described my personal family , societal , spiritual environment. A lifetime of closeness , loyalty , empathy, caring etc evaporated in a very short period of time. We were once all so close we could be likened to tight as tree bark, unpenetratable. Now we are " tight" but it can be " tight" as likened to a pack of wild dogs stuck together in a no holds barred take no prisoners toxic wasteland that has almost finished us off. It took from us our souls, our love , our sensibilities, sanity, caring etc. Im almost coming to tears just typing this ...and now I am ..
