How many and what gods does this reference?

Mosaic Law is built upon the Ten Commandments, and the law was built upon the first commandment: “I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me.” (Deuteronomy 5:6-7 NKJV). https://www.gotquestions.org/no-other-gods.html

Though they may provide some temporary joy, it never lasts, and then creates a driving lust that leads to your individual ruin.

The authors of the play upon which Inherit the Wind was based used transcripts of the Scopes trial for much of the courtroom dialogue; many of the things you hear those characters say are the actual words of Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan. As I recall that exchange between Darrow and Bryan about Cain's wife really happened, with Bryan saying something like, "I will leave it for the atheists to look for her".

Ancient religion was centered on the family and ancestor worship for which the family maintained hearth and burial ground and treated the dead as gods. As tribes began to form, and later, cities, even unto Rome, this ancient religion was maintained on a larger scale in order to attain their favor.

Consider, too, Gen 1:26 "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."
Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire. ― Gustav Mahler

    1. This is true.

    2. This is not likely the case.
