The writer wasn't suggesting that there necessarily ARE other gods, for he wouldn't have believed that. He was referring to the deities that other tribes and cultures worshiped at the time - the assumption being that they were either worshiping beings that didn't exist, or that they were - as some did - worshiping their kings and heroes as gods.

More interesting is where Cain's wife came from. When Cain left, he went to the Land of Nod, which according to Genesis 4:16 was not associated with "the presence of the Lord." That indicates others (not God's creation) were living on the earth at that time.

That opens a whole other realm of ideas to ponder.

I have always read this to mean....do not create other gods that you will worship in your life.
Money, power, sex, drugs, Hillary, ect.....


Though they may provide some temporary joy, it never lasts, and then creates a driving lust that leads to your individual ruin.
