It's good she finally apologized, but she's a politician now and she can't escape her past. For years, she stuck to her story, despite the fact she could not show any Native American ancestors in her lineage. Her apology is a day late and a dollar short.

You'll notice she says "Indian," and I'm pretty sure PC folks no longer say that -- but rather use the term "Native American." She'll probably catch some grief over that.

I saw this on TV and was thinking these people should be the last people she should be speaking to after decades of pretending to be one of them.

She did not out herself of her own volition.
Pressure to get to the truth from outside sources made her do it.
She lied to gain favor and an upper hand in an affirmative action system.

She got busted for the lies others exposed about her and now she is asking forgiveness.
None of her sorry and grief came from within her. It had to be drug out in the sunlight by others.


Heck, I am 2% myself. That is 2,000 more times native American than she is.

One can certainly have this opinion. Just make sure you apply the same standard to all those who stretch the truth.

Warren didn't lie; she submitted to a DNA test that showed American Indian ancestry, probably 6-10 generations back. (Trump pledged a million dollars if she could prove her Indian ancestry, and then reneged when the results came back, denying he'd ever made the challenge.) What she apologized for was using the self-applied labels "Indian" and "Cherokee" inappropriately. She apologized because she conflated DNA ancestry with tribal membership, which is what the nations were upset about. They have since, on several occasions, accepted her apology and many now support her. All of the outrage these days seems to be coming from White Republicans.

By the way, "Native American" had its day, briefly and is still self-applied by some individuals in some contexts, but for a long time polls have shown that American Indians prefer to be called (1) by their tribal name, and (2) Indians or American Indians.

Most social scientists place it at about twenty-five years, on average, which your Wiki source agrees with. You also have to consider that for a couple of centuries in the U.S. and before that Colonial America, it was considered perfectly normal for a girl to marry and begin having children at 16. Twenty-five times 6 is only 150 years, and even ten generations only takes it back to 1769 or so; I had ancestors who came to America forty years before that.
