Then at some point it hit me - what the $#@! is this all about? I'm always working toward something, when do I get to enjoy it and be content.

A lot of things about my thought process changed somewhat recently, like this and other things. I stopped being a robot, I think about things now and I'm much more content with a lot of things because of that.

I tried. I retired 3 years ago at the ripe old age of 49. I got bored. I started another business. Now I'm unretired. And still striving. Had a huge contract finish up in July, some smaller stuff since then.

Having goals isn't a bad thing, at all.

Stepping back outside of goal oriented mode and taking it in is the key I think. Like a priority thing.

Fore me it is appreciating what ever it is I am doing. I feel we can still make goals and plans, and still be aware we are alive. We can find ways to appreciate moments that we would have normally just passed by. We tend to think the next moment in the future will be better. We try to just get through the moment we are in. Think of how many moments get wasted when we live like this.

A lot of people work a lot. The only time they really look forward to is their 1 week vacation for the year. I think that, it's as simple as a change of perspective. We can still strive and plan, but instead of running, we start living all of our moments. Really live them.
We are all brothers and sisters in humanity. We are all made from the same dust of stars. We cannot be separated because all life is interconnected.

I dunno, not exactly sure what your personality type is.

Take the test, 16personalities.com or something, google it. Understand your personality type a bit more, that might help. It did for me a lot. I know now that when I'm being an $#@! I'm really not, it's how my brain works.

I hate taking vacations. I'm too worried about what my partners are doing with the business.
