Is it "demonization" if the men so portrayed are simply doing the things that actual men in real life are doing? And if other men in those same portrayals are not acting badly, but taking issue with the ones who are?
I absolutely agree that the hate-filled and, yes, bigoted rants against the male of the species one hears from some quarters are uncalled for and, in some extreme cases, even despicable. What I don't like seeing, however, is the sort of hypersensitivity exemplified by the reaction of so many to the Gillette ad.
Was not the bad behavior displayed in that ad pointed out in the ad by other men? If the men in the ad who were behaving badly had been corrected by someone other than other men - say, women - then those who claim that the ad vilified "all men" might have a halfway decent point. The men in the ad weren't, and the critics don't.
I'm reminded somewhat of the situation that used to exist with regard to Black people in films and television. The complaint - and it was a valid one - was that they were only ever portrayed as servants or criminals. In films and t.v. today, we have Black cops, doctors, attorneys, etc., and servants and criminals...but not only servants and criminals any longer. It shouldn't surprise, upset or outrage someone to see a man acting poorly around women, as long as that isn't all we see...any more than we are outraged or upset at seeing a man portrayed as a serial killer or other criminal. Most of the rapists and sexual abusers on 'Law & Order: SVU' are White guys; where are the protests of that show?

Perhaps, but wouldn't it be stupid to object to a t.v. drama showing a Black criminal if the same show featured a Black police detective and a Black attorney? In terms of the media's portrayal of men, that's similar to what we're looking at. Acknowledging that some men still treat women badly and that, as men, we can be instrumental in pointing it out when we see it happening is NOT a betrayal or indictment of men generally.
