Escorts deploy without USS Harry Truman as East Coast carrier shortage persists

Escorts deploy without USS Harry Truman as East Coast carrier shortage persists

This has not happened since 2006. A few times since escorts left prior to the carrier because it was under maintenance, but the carrier joined its group later.

Surface escorts from the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group left their homeports today to kick off an overseas deployment.

Aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) did not.

After the carrier was sidelined at the end of August with a malfunction in the ship’s electrical distribution system, engineers continue to assess the problem. “The aircraft carrier’s repairs are progressing, and all efforts are being made to deploy the carrier and air wing as soon as possible,” according to a Navy statement to USNI News.

The timeline for diagnosing the problem and fixing it remains unclear.

In the meantime, the surface ships in the strike group are forming their own surface action group and deploying with neither the carrier nor the air wing.

Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Lassen (DDG-82) and USS Farragut (DDG-99) departed Mayport, Fla., today, and will be joined by Norfolk-based USS Forrest Sherman (DDG-98) and Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG-60) in the coming days.

The SAG will be led by the Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 28 and her staff, along with elements of the carrier strike group staff. The SAG staff brought in about 15 additional personnel to make up for capabilities typically found on the carrier, particularly in the areas of maintenance and technical support, U.S. 2nd Fleet Commander Vice Adm. Andrew Lewis told USNI News today in a telephone interview.

The SAG will also take with it a detachment of MH-60R helicopters from Helicopter Maritime Squadron (HSM) 72 out of Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla.

I've been reading here lately that there is a growing opinion that carriers are obsolete. That they are too vulnerable to modern missiles and such. I have to admit that I don't know enough about their defenses, so I was wondering your opinion Peter.

I have read both sides of the debate and do not believe that carriers are obsolete. Especially with lasers entering the fleet. The big issue is hypersonic cruise missiles.

But it is a very expensive gamble. 1 sunk carrier will take over 6000 sailors (slightly less with the Ford class) and $4.5B (for the Nimitz class) to the bottom of the ocean.

Here is a short video from the Under Sec Def.

Here is an article from the National Interest that discusses the Chinese "carrier killer" v. a US Navy aircraft carrier. The author says the US should stop thinking its needs to keep its carriers far from danger and accept the inherent risk in any war.

What will provide this battle group air cover?

Is the supersonic missile theory argle bargle?

    Hypersonic.

Both China and Russia claim to have them. The DIA says they do. The questions become how many and how good are they. We are developing them.

The Surface Attack Group (not a carrier attack group without the carrier) will have helicopters on the destroyers. I am not sure if the cruisers would support a helicopter, but their have very good anti-air capabilities. But you are correct, there will be no carrier air group on this deployment.

Update. The electrical system has been fixed and the USS Harry S. Truman will deploy to catch up with its escorts soon.

Aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) is repaired and preparing to deploy, after extensive electrical issues sidelined the carrier from its scheduled September deployment date.
Truman and its carrier strike group had completed a final certification event, the composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX), and were preparing to head out on deployment around Labor Day, when the carrier suffered “electrical malfunction within the ship’s electrical distribution system requiring analysis and repair,” the Navy told USNI News in late August.

Since that time, a range of personnel – including from the ship’s crew and the nearby Norfolk Naval Shipyard repair facility – have been working to get the electrical distribution system back up and running.

“Returning HST to full functionality was a team effort with a tremendous amount of work and collaboration by NAVSEA, our industry partners, shipyard workers, and the crew of HST to overcome a very challenging technical issue,” Naval Sea Systems Command commander Vice Adm. Tom Moore said in a statement provided to USNI News by U.S. Fleet Forces Command.

USNI News previously reported that some enlisted sailors were forced out of their berthing spaces on the ship due to the lack of power and were living in hotels near the naval station. Repairs have continued since the late August recognition of the problem, with a source telling USNI News that new problems continued to arise as personnel opened up new electrical panels.
