Judge temporarily blocks logging in nation's largest national forest

A federal judge on Monday temporarily halted the Trump administration’s plans to open up thousands of acres in the nation's largest national forest to logging.

The decision by the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska placed a preliminary injunction on the logging of 42,500 acres of temperate rainforest in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest. It comes days before the administration was set to begin reviewing bids and offering contracts for the logging of old-growth timber in the forest.

The court ruled that “Plaintiffs have demonstrated that they are very likely to suffer irreparable harm in the absence of preliminary injunctive relief,” according to the ruling.

The article does not specify any particular reasons on either side.

In searching about this, I found that one estimate puts the amount of pine beetle-infested Alaska timber at 5 million acres, and the Tongass National Forest has its share. The article doesn't say if any of it is the timber at issue. According to Alaskan Forest Association, a timber industry trade organization, "there are no endangered or threatened animal species in Alaska's forests".

Lumber harvested from beetle-killed timber stands is (arguably) quite beautiful due to staining or something caused by the beetles.

This is dead and dying timber. If it isn't harvested, it will rot and go to waste, or become fuel for forest fires.

The plaintiffs are an eco-nutty group named "Earthjustice," and they like filing lawsuits.

That's not to say the forest doesn't deserve some protection, but it might be more productive to allow trees over a certain age to be harvested while leaving younger trees. They could also implement reforestation plans, not just there -- but in other areas.

Earthjustice once sued the Navy -- tried to force it to shut down its sonar if a dolphin or whale was within a mile or two. They lost that one, of course.

While admitting I haven't done extensive research on this particular area, before opening up an area to 'clearcutting' (a term used by the anti-harvester article), studies and plans are drawn for reforestation. I saw no mention of it in a quick google.

Of course there are eco-extremists who throw themselves in front of the heavy equipment, but for an injunction, even temporary, there must be some sort of compelling information.

Actually, I was wrong -- Earthjustice is just the legal group that's trying the case -- not the plaintiffs.

Here's the suit if you're interested:

Paradise California, anyone? Environmental nuts blocked forest thinking, they even blocked landowners from thinning their properties, look what happens when fire has all that fuel.

I've seen, here in Arizona, what happens when so called environmentalists block the cleaning of forests, the town of Show Low was threatened by fire, when it sweapt over the mountain.... even after, they didn't want the dead/burned trees to be removed.

Now, those people are trying to block the rebuilding of Paradise because of some stupid frog that might be there....it wasn't there, BEFORE?

Those people often do more harm, than good.

Eco protection of the bark beetle is what caused the huge Crestline fire a few years ago. The Eco freaks have got to be stopped.

It's not a matter of 'stopping' anyone. It's applying logic and common sense, to strike a balance between nature and mankind. Unfortunately, there are certain geographic areas that tend to one side or the other, with no balance in sight.

TreeHuggers are responsible for all our forest-fire disasters. Put lumberjacks ("sweaty macho beasts") out there and they'll stop any fire from spreading.

It's hard to accept that in the year 2019 , there is not an effective plan to manage both the environment , and the forestry industry , without this constant bickering from both sides. Forests are a valuable renewable resource that should be managed properly.
