    Paying College athletes.

The issue of paying college athletes is coming up again. I’ve heard redouble arguments for and against. Personally I think they should not be paid, but currently an athlete on a scholarship is forbidden to even get a part time job.

Paying college athletes might create a title IX issue. Football and basketball are the primary revenue sources for the NCAA. The revenues generated by those two help fund other activities. They would need to cut or eliminate some female programs to find the money.

College sports are amateur sports. Therefore, no pay for college athletes. All kinds of things wrong with it. It detracts from the students' studies and makes academics a joke. They can graduate nearly illiterate. Besides they already get huge gifts like sports cars, bling, fur coats and so forth now.

They should be able to get sponsorships and make money off their likeness, imo.

Baseball is not a hot college sport, not near the interest at football or basketball. Yet baseball is able to recruit players for farm teams and pay them while they are doing so. Somehow football and basketball must rely on college teams for their players. They get these players without any financial burden to themselves at all.

I believe since in essence the college teams are farm teams for the NFL and the NBA they should pay those players they are grooming for professional teams. The vast majority of college ball players do not go on to professional teams and since their entire emphasis has been on sports what do they do when they graduate (if they in fact graduate) and have to actually get a job. What are they trained for? The professional teams are certainly rich enough to pay for their new potential players.

Those gifts are a violation of NCAA rules and colleges are punished when caught.

I doubt that it would have much impact upon academics.

I would tend to agree that if their likeness is being used, they should be compensated for that.

I think that one develops more fully if you have periods in your life where you need to deal with hardship. College is a place designed for development. It is beneficial for college student of all stripes to learn how to deal with life's struggles.

College athletes have lower GPAs but are more likely to graduate.

I think the graduation rate depends on the sport.

Basketball is full of guys who play one or two years then try to make it in the NBA.

A very small minority of football players make it to the NFL. They tend to stay in school as they know there's no NFL in their future.

Get rid of college sports. It is a waste of time.
