Florida’s top cops offer their big idea to stop mass shootings. It’s not about guns

It wasn’t better background checks. Or keeping guns away from domestic violence abusers. Or maintaining a database of military-style weapons.

Rather, the state’s leading law enforcement authorities offered an ambitious but vague solution far removed from gun control: a first-of-its-kind effort to predict mass shooters before they attack. It would train police across the state how to recognize threats. The new alert system would require police, local governments, medical providers and the public to share more information about their fellow Floridians than ever before.

    Great stuff.

“I know that sends shivers and shudders through those that champion privacy concerns and rights and mental health rights,” State Attorney Phil Archer, president of Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association, told lawmakers during a Monday hearing. “Everybody’s going to have to give a little.”
    You are wrong about police.

Good Idea but for that to be effective all Educators across the country need to be trained to identify all the signs also.
The last two mass shootings in schools could have and should have been prevented because ALL the signs were right in everyones face.

It's not a good idea. It's not just a further chipping away of rights, it's taking a goddamned sledgehammer to them.

It's lack of foresight for some dimbulbs and entirely too well thought out for those interested in more totalitarian control over others.

Oh, I don't know Helena. I don't recall many mass shootings in Orwell's 1984. I mean sure a few generations looked at that book as a warning, but now it seems to be being used as an ideal!

You do realize that even the illegal sharing of private information won't empower the police to act against due process, correct? This is simply pacification 102 , it's high techish so some will embrace it just because of that alone, it might satisfy the NRA and not enough people understand or care about the breaches in federal privacy laws needed to make this happen.
And then nobody takes it the next step and says : How would this actually work in practice.? The answer of course is that it would not.

There is a fine line between keeping an eye on someone and harassing them. There are individuals who need to be watched, certainly, but in many cases making somebody the object of overt police scrutiny would only add to the feelings of paranoia and self-importance that make them a potential danger to begin with. Unless handled with great care and prudence, this sort of plan could seriously backfire.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.” - Robert E. Howard

"Only a rank degenerate would drive 1,500 miles across Texas and not eat a chicken fried steak." - Larry McMurtry
