    Were Roman Soldiers Short?

Interesting video. This guy makes a good point before even addressing the question when he says that by the time of Augustus the Roman military was international and not all legionaries were of Italian origin.

Hunh...I've never thought that Roman soldiers were 5' nothing guys, probably because I've known that Italians come in all sizes and that the Roman Empire comprised more than Italy. There are probably more people over 6' tall now, even on a relative basis than ever before in history primarily because of better nutrition and a general cultural tendency to choose taller mates all over the world.

Yes, many people in Europe were tiny both because of general nutrition and because of DNA, but there have always been tall people, particularly in northern territories and plains areas.

I was under the impression Roman Soldiers were smaller than many opponents but made up for it in strategy, weaponry and numbers. I also realized they had many they had conquerored join them and fight in their armies. How could they not and fight and have outposts in many countries, without any motorized anything If you read alot about romans you have to come to the conclusion they were inherently evil, with many of the things they did, but were they any worse than other people in the day. I dont think so, I think romans may have even been more civilized than most of them.

That Roman soldiers tended to be a little smaller than some of the other peoples they encountered is something I've read from time to time. I'm not sure where I first encountered that idea but I think it stems partly from Roman writers themselves who remarked on the larger physique of northern Europeans. I remember one person arguing that it even played a role in their use of the Gladius which is a short, stabbing weapon.

The Roman foot was shorter by 97% than today's foot.

    Interesting stuff.
