I’m from Washington state where the spotted owl was a big issue for a while. It was said that a spotted owl could only survive in old growth forests. That kind of fell apart when a spotted owls nest was discovered in a broken K Mart sign in Tacoma.

I saw a great bumper sticker then. It said, “Save a tree. Wipe your ass with a spotted owl”.

Remember back in the day when alligators were an endangered species? Now they have been discovered 400 miles north in NE Arkansas/TN. Even worse is a lot of them are extra crazy from meth lab runoff in the waterways.

    Two nights later ...

Eagle cam captures great horned owl attack on nesting pair of bald eagles in SW Florida. An aerial battle ensues, recorded by cam on the ground.

That's four recorded owl attacks -- three by great horned owls and one by a spotted owl -- against creatures much larger than they are -- including people! -- and that outnumber them. The attacks were both in the darkness of night and in broad daylight (see clips already posted). In this case above, there are no eaglets in the nest, so the owl was either attacking for a meal out of an eagle or (more likely) trying to drive the pair away simply so it could get in and study the contents of the nest. Amazing.

These clips evidence that GHOs are very aggressive. They could cause serious damage if they ever grabbed hold of you with their razor-sharp talons, and if it happened at night, that would make for a horrifyingly creepy experience that might well send you to the ER. Yet for reasons unknown, their reputations don't reflect a belligerence that extends even against humans.

    A skulking stalker.

    Cute ... Bwa-bwa-bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha ...

I had know idea how bold owls are! Can't think of another predator of that size that is anywhere near as aggressive. If they think they can get away with it, they'll do it whether humans are present or not! So remember to keep your kitty or puppy-dog on a leash beside you in an area known for owl attacks because, like the man in the video says, "there's a little more reluctance by the owl to actually confront humans." A little more.

A little more reluctance could well translate into a critical second or two and the difference between going home from the park with the tail wagger you came with or scraping up a pile of hamburger into a burial box.

I know that walking through the woods and seeing something as big as a great horned fly without sound is awe inspiring and a little spooky. I too can see how the myths about them developed.

This summer I was out in the woods sitting in a patch of sunshine. I had my little bird with me in his cage. Suddenly out of nowhere a huge white owl just flies out of the bushes in front of me, he flew right past me. He surprised the heck out of me. I was really not expecting that. But after that I took my bird back in the house. I wasn't trying to bait the owl, with my bird, Lol. My poor bird was scared.
