    Owl returns another night:

    And another night:

GHO attacks osprey nest, takes chick

GHO attacks osprey nest, takes second chick

Goshawk(?) wipes out entire osprey nest. No idea why the ospreys were so lethargic. Something wrong there, but there it is.

Not until I've watched clips of owls interacting with other birds of prey did I begin to develop a bit of a distaste for them. They are so silent that sometimes other birds don't realize they have flown up and are sitting on the branch next to them, the owl's prey, waiting for a chance to kill. Owls are very interesting but sort of creepy, and I can understand better now how they have developed in myths and legends.

We have a couple of Great Horned Owls in the neighborhood. I've never actually seen them kill anything, but I'm sure they do keep the pigeon population around here down. The wife saw two disembodied wings lying in the street today.

Living in the country, I often hear the hoot of an owl at night, and I love the sound, but I know they can be deadly to other birds and small critters.

My sister and I were once way out in the boonies and we couldn't pinpoint the source of a loud "thumping," so we walked over a ridge and found an old abandoned home site -- just rubble -- and looked down an old well. I had a weird feeling and looked up and there on an old beam above the well was a white owl -- almost directly above us -- looking down at us. It stayed for probably 10 seconds or so and then finally lifted off. Was strange because it was daytime -- and because the owl was white.

I think it's their silent, stealthy surprise attacks always under cover of darkness that has given them their sinister reputation and association with evil.

I can think of no weapons or machines made by man that are named after or in honor of owls. Can anyone else?
