My Friday encounter with the US Navy.

My brother ther in law and I went to the Thursday night football game between the Seahawks and Rams. We took his sail boat over and spent the night in a downtown marina.

We motored back Friday morning. We happened to motor back at the same time the USS Nimitz was returning to Bremerton. The Nimitz is heading west, but bearing south to to shipyard. We are heading west also, but bearing north to our home marina. We are five to six hundred meters away from the Nimitz. That distance was increasing as we proceeded home. I was as far away from the Nimitz as I could get without running aground because of the keel of the sailboat.

I'm running the boat. My brother in law says that a navy fast boat was approaching us at a high speed. A female voice comes across a hailer telling us to move away from the US Navy war ship. I yelled back, "what are you thinking, we are not anywhere close to the ship", then I waved her off and continued my same course. In fact I closed the distance between us a bit as I had to navigate around a channel marker. She did not like me waving her off in a dismissive manner, but there was nothing she could do. She had no legal authority in those navigable waters.

I chalked it up to a young woman being in what she thought was a position of authority and she was going to excessive that authority. I just hope that she learned that not everyone is as impressed with you as you are of yourself. Many women seem to become overly impressed with themselves when they work in a predominately male field.

I did get some cool pictures of the Nimitz on my phone though. That freaking thing is huge.

Nimitz class carrier. The Ford class would be bigger.

The Nimitz is the oldest carrier in the US inventory. The USS Carl Vinson is in the Bremerton shipyard now and it appears to be larger.

Still I'm not sure why the navy escort focused on us. We were further away from the Nimitz than any other civilian boat in the water and we were on a different heading.

I can't fault the Navy in this instance. As for the coxswain on the fast boat I am sure she was under orders to tell you to stand clear of the carrier. If it had been a male would you have assumed she was merely asserting authority she didn't have?

After Cole the Navy is cautious. Did you notice the 20mm cannons pointed in your direction?

There were no weapons pointed in my direction as it was common sense that we weren't any kind of a threat. I was in a 50 foot sailboat traveling at 6 knots on a different heading than the Nimitz. The fast boat which approached us looked to have an M-240 MG mounted on the bow, but it was covered with a plastic tarp. It was windy and a bit nasty weather.

We weren't in a San Pan in some Asian port or in a middle eastern port where Islamic terrorists are common. The sailors in tha fast boat were overzealous young people impressed with themselves and they thought I should be just as impressed. I wasn't and they went away sad faced.

We were 5 to 600 meters away and getting farther away as we proceeded home.

If it was a male, I would have given him the finger.

I doubt you would have seen them. But they were there. The slew rate is very fast.

It is almost as if the last 30 years of history is unknown to you.

    Cool.
